Reality Therapy

Reality Therapy is a counseling approach developed by psychiatrist William Glasser in the 1960s. It helps individuals take responsibility for their choices and actions to achieve personal goals and improve relationships. At its core is Choice Theory, which asserts that human behavior is driven by five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.

Key aspects of Reality Therapy include:

  1. Focus on the Present: Emphasizes current behavior and thinking rather than past events or trauma.
  2. Taking Responsibility: Encourages clients to recognize how their choices affect their lives and relationships.
  3. Meeting Basic Needs: Guides clients to satisfy their needs effectively without harming others.
  4. Building Relationships: Stresses the importance of strong therapeutic connections and meaningful relationships.
  5. No Excuses or Blame: Avoids pathologizing behavior and discourages blaming external factors.
